Why Pushing People Into Network Marketing Doesn’t Work

the-door-to-door-salesman-from-hell-1

Hi, everyone, this Mark, welcome back. If you’re new, please remember to like and subscribe to get notified when we add new content. We’re going to talk about why network marketers use high pressure tactics and what you can do about it. You know, I got involved in network marketing back in the late 80s, early 90s. And I was involved in the Amway business originally, and I had never heard of network marketing. Although I’m not involved with Amway anymore, I did learn a lot about how to build network marketing businesses, and we became successful using those old school methods. One of the things that always upset me about building that business was not the network marketing business concept, but the negative methods used to build it. Many people have a negative perception of network marketing, when in fact it’s one of the best business models around.

What messes it up are the people that are in network marketing business typically, and it’s because of using high pressure tactics to enroll, sponsor, or sign up new distributors/affiliates. And that was one of the things that always bothered me. I was in Amway for over 10 years. And it was just one of those things you start to get used to doing. Pushing people into the business or trying to and in the end that is because you’re completely messed up in your thinking. You don’t really think it through, you’re thinking about yourself, you’re not thinking about them. And what’s the point of that? You know how it goes. You’re trying to run for a promotion and so you panic and start pushing. A lot of times your upline they’ll have these promotions and they’re centered around sponsoring people.

Everybody knows network marketing has a high attrition rate, which means a lot of people get in and it doesn’t cost a lot of money to get in so it’s easy for people to quit. And what I found is that when we got started in the business, I was pretty excited about it. And I understood network marketing a bit. As I started to learn more, I realized it was definitely a numbers game. And I remember when I started sharing the business, I was surprised that some of the people that I thought would see it the same way, didn’t. Almost no one I knew saw the business opportunity the same way that I did.

I looked at it really simply because I had a conventional business prior to that, and you have to invest a lot of money. And, in fact, that business failed, and I had a lot of business debt, and I ultimately paid it off versus going bankrupt. I thought, why should I do that to the creditors and the banks? It’s not their fault, and that my business failed. So, you know, for a short period of time, I was very disappointed and thought, what are we going to do now? You know, I had a goal in mind as far as income and lifestyle, just like a lot of people. And I thought, you know, now what am I going to do? I’m just going to have to work a job. I can’t have a business of my own. And the thing I understood was is that having your own business is how you can get wealthy and have some level of financial independence. And so, network marketing seemed perfect for that. Because you have the income potential. And it works. There’s proven success, and it doesn’t cost you a lot of money to have or build a network marketing business as compared to a traditional business.

So, I thought this is perfect. Why wouldn’t everybody want to do it? So, as we got started, I shared it with everybody. And over a period of time, some of them got in, some of them didn’t. And that kind of turned to anger because you’re looking at it and going, how come people don’t understand it. And then you start sharing the business with other people and some of them get involved and, and you try to convince them too hard. And, you know, maybe they’re looking, maybe they’re not and one of the things when you first get started in network marketing is you’re excited and you want to kind of spread that around, and you can get your feelings hurt really easily when people that you respect don’t see what you see. And so, you try to bully them into the business. And even if they get involved, you know, they’re not going to build the business. They just didn’t know how to say no or they didn’t want to say no to you and hurt your feelings. And the ones that do say no, then you’re really upset. So, you kind of start to get belligerent and now you’re going to bully everybody and make other people that didn’t see what you see feel bad. And that’s just stupid. Because the whole thing about network marketing is you have to have the willingness to help other people be successful, and then you’ll be successful as a byproduct.

People usually have that flipped around and a lot of that comes from their upline, you know, promoting trips and so forth that are all centered around recruitment. And you obviously have to continually recruit in your network marketing business, but you don’t have to do it by being a bully and pushing people into the business and the ones that don’t get in around your timeframe. You treat them like crap, that’s not the way to build a network marketing business, but a lot of people are pushing others in that same fashion. And that’s what I think gives people a negative perception about network marketing. And so, you just have to stop doing that.

Number one, you have to admit, you’re not comfortable doing it, you know, it’s wrong. You know, it’s not the right way to do it. I understand you want to hit that promotion, or you want to, advance to the next level. You want to reach your goals, but you can’t do it by burning out everybody else around you and burning through the people and giving them a negative perception about network marketing.

It’s kind of like this, people that truly understand the network marketing, business model, they’ll love it. What they don’t love are the people in it, who continually pester them about opportunity meetings and getting involved once they have said no.

So, when I got started in, network marketing again, here a couple of years ago, I was specifically looking for an opportunity and business method, where you don’t pester people, you don’t bug them. And in fact, we use a business model that uses network marketing, but I don’t bug anybody to get involved in business with me and get on my team. I was looking at my team. I think I personally enrolled 20 people already this month and none of those people were bullied or pushed or pressured by me. All of them came to me to find out about the opportunity, all of them asked to get involved in my team. And, of course, we decided, yeah, we can work together. And so now we’re working together to help build their business.

It’s a completely different posture. And that posture is what builds teams. It’s what helps you to focus in on other people, not on yourself. And as a byproduct, you’ll have your team success, you’ll have your network marketing, business success, and the incomes will follow. And those people will have a positive experience with network marketing. And they will at least not say that, hey, you know what? I got pushed in. I got pressured in because I just wanted that person to stop talking to me about it. That’s the worst thing you can do.

You know, the best thing you can do is focus in on helping others that are looking for an opportunity. If they’re looking for an opportunity, your job is to help them find you. And that’s what I teach my team. And so, nobody has to pressure anybody. There are thousands of people out there looking, especially right now with what’s going on in the world. And you can build your business in any country, in any region that you want. And there are people looking every day. And every day there are more people turning 18 years old, that want to have their own business, you have an unlimited supply of people, but not all of them are going to be looking to get involved in network marketing business.

When the time’s right and they’re looking, you want them to get involved with you because you treated them well. You didn’t upset them, you didn’t blow them out of the business, and possibly out of every network marketing business because they had such a crappy experience because you treated them poorly by trying to push them in to your network marketing team so, you could benefit to get some level, get some trip, get some promotion. And if you just do the work and you do it right, you know, then it’s going to work. I mean, just think about if you bullied in 10 people in your business, and they are going to duplicate your methods, since it is a business of duplication.

Do you think are they actually going to go and build the business successfully, because they’re going to duplicate what you did to get them involved, and go and bully 10 other people or 100 people or 500 people, it isn’t going to work, that team isn’t going to develop. And if even if it did, it’s not going to last. What you want to do is build long lasting business relationships, building associates and building teams. That’s what you focus in on. That’s what gives it success, not the others. If you look at all your leaders, they don’t bully in anybody. They don’t wait around for certain people to get involved. And they’re not sitting there hinging their success on one or two individuals to become leaders on their team. They just give the opportunity to those that want to take it.

And it’s not just about getting them signed into the business. Especially if they actually just want to hit their promotion, or their next level. And they’re not really actually interested in caring whether those people want to spend time building the business or not. They just go back and basically beg them to get in and “help them out”, and then they leave him alone to figure things out. Wow.

What’s the point of that? Somebody ends up with products and a sign-up kit, and then they don’t build it? That’s not what network marketing business is about. Sure, people do get in and they don’t build it. That’s going to happen with anything. It happens in every business that you have out there. But what you want to focus in on is helping people and it’s kind of like this, you shouldn’t have your feelings hurt when somebody tells you no. And if you’re not pursuing them for your own ends, then it doesn’t hurt your feelings when they say no, you actually start to feel bad for them, because they don’t see what you see. And you hope that in the future that they do because you start to care about people and it hurts inside when you see somebody you care about. And you know, I see that that person or that couple has amazing potential to build a successful business. Why don’t they do it? And I know that can be painful. I’ve had that happen many times, but everybody’s in a different situation and they will come to it when they’re ready.

The best thing you can do is not pressure them continually go to the next function, or call them saying “Hey, why don’t you go to the next meeting?” And all these things are generally prompted initially by your caring, and then it kind of trickles over into I just want to get my numbers up, you know for this event or for this function and the pressure from your upline starts to come in. We work in a team where nobody gets pressured like that, where you do not feel guilty, because you didn’t have 10 new people at the next meeting or function, or you didn’t sign up 10 new people and hit some promotion, we help everybody that wants to do the work, those that didn’t do the work because the circumstances or choice. Do not get pressured or have guilt feelings about it. If they do, it’s all self-imposed. I do not put pressure on anybody like that.

I do encourage them and that’s the difference between trying to encourage and help versus pressure and push. It just doesn’t make any sense. So anyways, if you have had those experiences, I’d love to hear your comments and hear your stories, because if you’re like me, somebody has shared with you, Network Marketing and is trying to push you into it. Love to hear how that went. And hopefully, if you’re looking at this and you’re thinking, yep, I get it. Hopefully you take another look at other business opportunities. The opportunity is good. Sometimes it’s just the people that are misguided and you know they got taught by some crappy people, and they’re just duplicating it.

You can set off in a new direction without that. If you’re interested in learning more about what we’re doing and the team that we’re building and how we do it, click this link No Pressure Network Marketing and you can learn more.

How To Overcome The Fear Of Cold Contacting For Your Network Marketing Business

Most people who join a network marketing company are excited to start sharing the products and business opportunity with their friends and family. As they start that process they are also learning about how the business works and they expect to have everyone they know see what they see in it. Sometimes they do; but many times they will tell you they are not interested or they will wait and see what you do.

The typical response to this is to start to pull back a bit and only share with the people who you believe “need it” the most. Surprisingly you may find, as I did that they don’t have any interest in getting involved in something that can help them out of their situation. You were probably like me, in that you assumed they wanted to improve their situation. Unfortunately many people don’t. I had someone tell me that they could not get involved in a business and make $2000-$5000 extra a month because “they would lose their welfare benefits”. Yikes! I thought that was the point.

Now if you are still “in” at this point your sponsor or upline will tell you you need to start cold contacting. They will show you different techniques, on how to talk to people that you have never met before. That is where things got even more difficult for me.

Let’s back up a bit. I was a very introverted person who was afraid to talk to people I did not know and was not completely comfortable talking to my friends and family about the business. Sure the first few I was fine with, but when they thought it was a scam or a dumb business idea that would not work, I started to doubt it too.

This on top of my regular introverted discomfort led me to stop building the business for a while. Most network marketers will quit building the business at this point. Many won’t quit immediately, but will start to fade away. Some will buy the products and show up to everything because they enjoy the friendship but will not share the business with anyone ever again unless they are asked about it. Remember this last point.

I had sponsored some friends and family so I started going into management mode with that team. This was my way of avoiding the whole process of cold contacting. Too bad it did not work for long because this pattern of fear of cold contacting continued with almost everyone on my team. I thought we must only have enrolled introverts like myself. Luckily there were a few very assertive people who started to invite lots of people to see the business and things started to grow fast.

Eventually I did need to start figuring out the best cold contacting methods and had to teach them to my team. My desire to be a good leader helped me to overcome my fears, and I was even able to call people from the phone book and set one on one appointments with my team to show the business opportunity.

As I grew my business I was invited to speak at business seminars and share the opportunity in hotel meetings. These groups were larger than your typical house meeting with about 100-150 people. The seminars had 400-600. Of course I was nervous but it was a progressive process and eventually I became good at it and enjoyed it.

How does all this help you? Well most of what I have described is not how I build the business today. Two main reasons drive that choice. #1 people are too busy to look up from their cellphones for you to contact them and #2 people are more leery and on guard of strangers approaching them with any type of solicitation.

Today all of the methods of cold contacting have changed significantly due to technology. I mean lets be serious how many people go out and “prospect and contact” people in a shopping mall, car dealership or store any more? It can work but it much too slow and time consuming for most of us.

Over come the fear

The fear part comes from the possible rejection of you and your opportunity. You start feeling like you cannot be successful unless you get people into your business. So in your mind you start needing the next person you talk with to get in. That ends up coming through in your contact and approach and becomes a cycle of fearful, needful cold contacting that leads to no one getting involved in your business. You start sounding and looking desperate and nobody wants to join you on that adventure.

Now lets consider this: If someone out of the blue heard you were in this network marketing company that had great products and was looking to build a business that could replace their job income.

Would you be afraid to tell them all about your opportunity? I would guess not. In fact you probably would need to be careful not to unload everything you know about the business all at once and overload them. So what happened to the fear?

To me it always seemed different when they approached me about it than when I approached them.

What if there was a system that has qualified leads coming to you about your business opportunity instead of you going to them? Sounds a lot better right? Today that is possible through attraction marketing. I teach people how to flip the script on this old school way of cold contacting.

Today I have about 20-40 people who contact me daily to learn more about my products and business opportunity. I am no longer afraid to share the details with them, after all they asked me and they are looking. In the old school method where you ask people you don’t know if they would be interested in looking at a way to increase their income. Who wants to talk about that with a stranger?

You don’t have be afraid to share your knowledge with someone who is asking you about it. After all you are an expert in your business and they asked you for help about learning more. It is a great feeling knowing everyday people will be reaching out to me to get more details.

Network marketing is still a numbers game and not everyone who contacts me will join the business or even qualify. But it certainly increases your odds when twenty or more people start asking you for more information.

If you found this article interesting or want more details on how it works, please contact me and subscribe to my site for updates on more topics like this. I personally teach anyone on my team how to use this method.

How NOT to Go Broke In Your MLM

Creating_wealth_Avoid_going_broke_150-milion

Yes it is possible to go broke in any MLM or Network Marketing business venture. When you first consider joining, you are excited to be starting your own business and setting some goals.  Here are some tips and some honest answers to avoid going broke from the start. One of the very first things to think about is what level to join at.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY TO JOIN?

Most companies today have more than one level that you can join at. The compensation plan usually has different levels of commissions. Typically the higher the cost options to join will increase your percentage of “initial” commissions. I am sure the person who introduced the business opportunity told you that you can earn more with the more expensive packages. This is true if you are serious about building it really fast.

Here’s what I tell my people. Unless you are interested in trying every product in the starter package, save your money.  I am sure not many leaders will tell you that. That being said, it is important to make sure you understand your product line and are using some of them so you can share your personal experiences. Additionally most companies have a minimum amount of volume you need to generate either from retail sales or personal usage to stay active. Don’t over buy!

I have not seen where buying the most expensive package translates to people building the business any more or less that anyone else.  People still quit at the same rate no matter what. There are exceptions to this for people who are really ready and experienced at sharing products and business opportunities from prior MLM experience. Most people don’t get that fast of a start and the next month your volume has dropped because you are the only one on your team still. The commission payout levels don’t stay high when your volume falls. Plus you can earn your way up the commission scale by building your business. This is done by adding customers and distributors. Which is better, and costs you less. You can always order more products in other categories later on.

DON’T OVER INVEST IN TOOLS AND SEMINARS

Every good MLM company or organization will promote a teaching system of some kind. The fact for most people is that you will need to learn some new things and a good MLM education can cost some time and money. Here’s the key. Pace yourself.

You can only absorb so much new information at a time. When you first get started you have many new things you need to learn. The reality is you can learn more by doing and making mistakes than any book or seminar. You just need to stay in the production mode for your business. This is only two things. Getting more customers and distributors. PERIOD! You don’t need any books, CD’ or seminars to get started doing that.

Yes you will mess it up. But you will learn as you go and you can always learn from your upline and that teaching is usually free. Don’t forget other free sources like YouTube videos  and blog articles like this one. They are always free!

DON’T JOIN AT ALL…WHAT???

Yes that’s correct. I said to avoid going broke it may be best for your NOT to join. Let’s face it MLM or Network Marketing type businesses are not for everyone. If you don’t think you will be able to share you products and business opportunity with other people, especially those you don’t know then it may not be for you. If you really just love the products then be a great customer.

Why spend all that money to sign up, go to every seminar, read every book and listen to every CD and watch every live stream event or go to conventions if you never are going to do the things that build it? That is the way most people who claim to have went broke or lost their house and job did it. It makes no sense to me but people do join everyday and are they are not willing to learn new things, overcome some fears or simply do the work. You cannot have success on any level without some work, and investment of time and money. Think about it for a bit and then decide.

That is like paying for a college education then not ever pursuing a job in your field of study. There’s no pay back in it for you.

If you’re willing to check out the business you are looking to join and make a sensible decision about how much time, money and effort it will take to get what you want then you will make better decisions. Avoid the pressure of “getting in the first night”. Most people who use that approach are in it to hit numbers based on getting people signed up. Most companies pay a “fast start” bonus on it.

Trust me if you wait a few weeks and really check it all out. Get all of your questions answered they will still let you join. Hope this helps! For a free tour of my business click HERE!

How Do You Create Urgency In Your Network Marketing Business Team?

So you have started your Network Marketing Business and you don’t know how to create a sense of urgency in yourself or your team. It is possible that your sponsor or upline is talking about “getting and sense of urgency” but they have not told you how to do it. It can be easier said than done, but here are few tips to help you achieve it for yourself and your team members.

Urgency Tip # 1- Set Goals

This is critical to generating urgency. We are talking about you setting goals for yourself and in some cases your team. When you have a goal that is SMART it helps you to be focused on urgently doing the things that need to be done to achieve it and nothing else.

SMART Goals are different than just  saying I am going to enroll two people in my business this month.

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Based

The Time Based part is the part that drives urgency, but be careful here. You need to understand if you are giving yourself a realistic time-frame to hit the goal. For example, if your goal is to earn $10,000 this month in your business and you only have two days per month you can work on it, then is it very likely that it is achievable? It may or may not be. You want to have bit of a reach to hit your goal but it needs to be somewhat tied to the amount of effort you can invest. Work with your business leaders to help you set this or message me and I will help you out.

Urgency Tip #2-Break It Down

Have you ever heard the phrase “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time” this is exactly what you need to do to create urgency. Break the goal or objective down into small parts that you can do very quickly. This creates momentum in you and in your team.

Urgency tip #3-Focus

This means staying focused on doing only the work that leads to the goal you have set. Anything else is a distraction and diverts your resources away from fast growth and urgency. Keep in mind that some of your time may need to be spent teaching and helping your team how to do these things. That done, will lead to effective duplication and increase the velocity and urgency the business is being built by the whole team.

Final Thoughts

Remember that creating this sense of urgency does not mean that your are doing nothing but driving your team into a frenzy of activity, where everyone is bouncing off the walls. When you are talking about your business or products with prospects who need more time to make a decisions than you are wanting to give. Just remember that everyone moves at their own pace. Don’t blow them out of the business forever because you want to succeed faster than they want to join.

This is short term thinking and will not work! You will need people at all different levels of learning and thinking and learning about your business opportunity. Some will jump in right away, others will take 2 or 3 years. You want them all so don’t be rude because you are in a hurry. That is not the same as being urgent. Just continue to move forward and find people who want to go as fast as you do, but keep all of them in play until they tell you ” no I don’t want to join you”.
