Been in Amway Before? Then You Will Understand This!

Welcome back. I wanted to talk about my experiences back when I was in Amway. In 1989, that’s when I first got started in it actually, and I was in it for over 10 year. And I was thinking about it this morning. I don’t know why. But, you know, I was thinking about a couple people back in the day that I worked with while I was in Amway. When I got involved in in network marketing, with Amway, I didn’t have a negative viewpoint on it. I didn’t know anything about the company when I was presented with the opportunity. I didn’t know anything about network marketing, but I thought what a great business concept this is and you know, we started learning more and building our business.

QUIXTAR

What happened over the course of time, was that the company got handed to the second generation and some good things happened when they made this next step to what they called Quixtar which was same company but under a different name. And they started moving towards online shopping concepts and more of a digital age. I remember having a little miniature CD that had a little video embedded into it was called the digital business card. I still have some laying around. And I thought what an amazing concept. This was back in the beginning when the internet was really brand new. I mean, we still had dial up Internet access, if you could believe that. And most people probably don’t even know what dial up Internet access is. It’s still a classic sound that is used if you ever saw the movie, you’ve got mail.  with actors, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. They would email each other and have the dial up sound of the modem. And it was really unreliable and slow. And so, I kind of looked at it where we were ahead of our time, because many people didn’t trust online shopping. And they were afraid to put their credit card number in because somebody might, you know, get ahold of it and their personal information and people were very unsure about it. And I think back, you know, to those times, I thought, while we were on the cutting edge. I’d already been in Amway about five years by the time that started happening. And then they kind of messed up, you know, the second generation of the family that owns the Amway Corporation took over and things got kind of messed up.

MORE CHANGES

At the same timeframe, we had changes going on in our own lives, you know, and so, what I found was is that the network marketing business was fantastic, that business concept is still great. And that’s why billions of dollars are done in network marketing today. I mean, more than the NFL, the movie industry and many others combined. Network Marketing produces billions and billions of dollars. Look it up. It’s pretty impressive. There’s nothing wrong with the business concept, multilevel marketing, network marketing, it’s the same thing. But what usually screws it up are the people. You know, you look at it. I mean, we had a pretty good organization, we reached a higher level than the Amway business. And, you know, we didn’t reach financial freedom at that point in time. We weren’t diamond level or anything like that. But that was our goal. And we’re working towards it. What we found interesting over time was is that the business that was our own, it was supposed to be our own. We didn’t get to make any of the decisions in it. You know, we had an upline that was controlling what we were doing, what we could do, what we can’t do. And I’ll give you a key example of it. I was thinking about it this morning, and I think about my time in the Amway business so often and it’s mostly positive, but there are some negatives.

COLD CONTACTING? REALLY?

You know, there was a lot of things about the business concept that were fantastic, majority of them, frankly. But a lot of the people had methods that I just wasn’t comfortable with. And I found most people weren’t. I’ll give you one good example cold contacting after you’ve, shared the Amway business with your friends and family, one of two things usually happens and sometimes some of both, your friends and family either start to ignore you and avoid you, or some of them get involved with you. And you find out that they have a negative idea of Amway, and in some cases, even some family members or friends start to think that maybe you’re better than them because you’re trying to improve yourself or your situation. And I always cracked up about that. None of those people ever came to save the day for me and my family when we were having financial difficulties. But all of them had an opinion about what I shouldn’t be doing to make more money and be more successful. And yet, you know, I didn’t listen to any of them because none of them were actually paying my bills or even offered to help financially. So, if you’re in that situation, you know, look at it and think about that for a second, why listen to people that are not supporting you, financially, or helping you financially? Why should you be discouraged about doing something that improves your family’s financial future? One of the things that came out of that process is you had to learn how to cold contact, because after your friends and families, seeing the business or did refuse to see the business, whatever the case may be, you have to talk to people that you don’t know. And this is the thing here, they teach you methods that are very difficult for the average person to use. You have to be able to talk to people that you don’t know and approach people, cold and so forth. And I got very good at doing that. But they always had a thing called duplication. Everything you had to do had to be duplicatable. I used to think about it and I thought what about cold contacting is duplicatable? Frankly, nobody duplicates it. Very few do, only the leaders do. And there’s few of those, why does it have to be so difficult? And Isn’t there another way to do it?

 

ARE YOU PLUGGED IN?

And, you know, you really had no wiggle room to innovate or to do your own thing you had to follow the system. If you weren’t “plugged in”, then you kind of get shunned by the upline, and then they would go around you and, you know, talk to people in your group negatively about you and say that you weren’t plugged in, and it’s just a bunch of crap. And it’s amazing people start getting into a position of what they call leadership. But really, they’re not leaders. They’re just people that want to control everything, and getting your own business is about you controlling what you do and controlling your future and deciding to work when you want to and work the way you want to. Now there’s some exceptions to that. I believe in my opinion, and in my business, you need to be ethical, honest, and you have to be able to build with the right intentions. So, there are some limits there. But the as far as flexibility and innovation, I mean, that’s what people want when they start their own business. Yes, they want a pattern for success that they can follow. They can follow their leadership; they can follow their leaders into success and do the same thing that they did to get them successful. I mean, it always made sense to me. If you wanted to be a millionaire, you need to find someone who’s willing to teach you and do what they did. And you always had that opportunity. What I found over the years was that I got very discouraged with the network marketing business and Amway not with the concept but with the people. After a while you started feeling guilty, you know, as you’re in the business for 10 plus years, things change, you know, you have children, your life changes, but if you weren’t able to be as committed as other people, you may not be able to do everything you did before. I always love this; right? My main upline was in Utah, and they’d hold their functions in their own backyard, basically in in their city in Salt Lake City, Utah. And make everybody feel like crap and guilty that couldn’t spend money or time to travel to Salt Lake City to be at their major function. It was very convenient for them, but they’d make it inconvenient for everybody else and then treat you like dirt if you couldn’t be there because you didn’t have time off from work, or you couldn’t afford the travel or you had childcare issues, and they weren’t very understanding. And I thought this is not about people caring about people. This is about people that care about people that do what you say. And I don’t like that. That’s not what individual business ownership is about. So, I kind of got burned out for a long time on the idea of dealing with this because I saw several other opportunities over the years and they all have the same kind of what I call old school thinking. Do what your upline tells you or else. And if you don’t, you’re not plugged in. If you’re not plugged in, we’re not going to support or promote your opportunity meetings or your business or work in your downline or whatnot. And I thought that’s a bunch of Crap.

WHY NOT TWO LEGS, NOT SIX?

The other difficulty is, is that we had to build six legs to be a diamond level and who had time outside of working a job to build six legs? Especially here I live in California. So, you know you need a substantial income to retire from your job if you live back in the Midwest, that’s at this time or back east, and you weren’t already a successful professional with a lifestyle that revolved around that income that you were earning. And you made $40,000 a year, it wasn’t that difficult to make $40k a year in Amway and retire as a diamond without a big organization, and then try to help other people retire. Unfortunately, it takes a whole heck of a lot more people to retire at a six-figure income for a working professional in Southern California at the time, and it’s no different today, frankly, in many other states as well. So, there was a lot of unrelatability between a lot of these old school network marketers.

STILL OLD SCHOOL-YIKES!

So, over the time, I started looking for new opportunities. And I thought, you know, the best kind of opportunity is one where it’s not a set of corporate people that own the business and run the business at a corporate level. It’s about a company that’s been started, owned and operated by network marketers that understand what the challenges are, and have built a company and organizational structure and training system around the needs of the network marketer, the distributor or the affiliate, the representative that whatever your term is. And finally, after several years of looking, I thought I found that and there was a very successful network marketing person from the old Amway days who was in my upline and that was involved in that business. And the products were fantastic and they still are, I use several of them every day. However, the building style of the business is still old school, they’re still doing it the old school way. And because they have a replicated website, they think that that’s modern and the fact that’s like, you know, 10 years old technology, and they have a canned app. And you know, nobody knows how to use attraction marketing, social media. They don’t have any of the things that we have in our business that actually work, especially when people are doing things on their cell phone more and more, and tablets, laptops and their computers. And during this time when you’re under a stay at home, or how do you expand your business when you’re old school and you got to go have home meetings, one on ones, open opportunity meetings? How do you even get people to go to those things when they are allowed?

NEW SCHOOL-FINALLY!

We build our business without any of those things. We have a network marketing business that’s successful with a system that is a “done for you” marketing system provided by the company for free. It doesn’t cost money to enroll in the business. It doesn’t cost money for the training system, because you want everybody to be successful. You provide that equally to everybody, not just the ones who could afford $24.95 a month. And then that’s just to buy the privilege for you to be able to buy the tools and things. And the reason why, is that there’s a lot of money in the training and tool system in network marketing. And in the business that I checked out for a short period of time, the person who’s running that training system, he’s got everybody locked into it. And basically, it’s the same old school thinking, if you’re not plugged into that training system, then you basically you can’t build your business successfully. And in fact, if you’re not part of that system, you can’t rank advance. What it was a scheme that is, I mean, that’s crazy, right? And then they don’t even give you the tools to be successful. And so, we work in a business that doesn’t have any of those restrictions. If you were in Amway before, or any network marketing company that this sounds familiar. You need to look around because what we’re doing; and there are other companies doing it too, that are started by network marketers having fast growth, great products, free training systems that are current up to date, and constantly being improved and evolved with the changing marketplace, the changing needed the distributors. And it’s unbelievable. That business that I was in for a very short period of time, they haven’t had a new product in a year. And they haven’t updated their methodology for building it since they started. They’re still doing what they did five years ago. And look at the comparison in growth. They haven’t grown. They probably have 20,000 distributors worldwide. And the company that I’m working with now we have over 800,000 in the same period of time. So, the numbers tell the story. It’s not about one master distributor making a lot of money. It’s about everybody being able to make a significant income and you just have to look at the compensation plans to get the opportunities.

THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY IS HERE

So, if you have been in Amway or other businesses before and you loved certain aspects of it. Don’t give up on that concept that concept works but you do have to work a little harder to find companies that are doing it right. That are using methods that allow people that are already searching for opportunity to find you. That’s what I do and that’s what I teach my team. We work with attraction marketing, you know, I don’t cold contact. People that are already looking are able to find me and the opportunity and that’s the key and nobody has to cold contact. What’s more duplicatable than that? Because cold contacting is not duplicatable when people don’t actually do it and don’t feel comfortable doing it or they don’t ever get really good at doing it. How can you duplicate that? If one out of 10 and it’s probably not even that high, actually would do cold contacting successfully and comfortably and also key here, confidently. How duplicatable is that? Who wants to enroll 10 people that maybe only one out of 10, or one out of 20 even will be successful at duplicating that? And the process of “let’s just have them, enroll a few friends and family” and then hopefully, you know, they keep doing that until you find a leader is so much harder and takes so much work. And it doesn’t stay together. If you have to teach people how to do something that they don’t like doing, and that they won’t do; the business is not sustainable. And I was part of a group that had well over 800,000 people in the group, not my group, but I was part of that team. And that whole team is completely gone! That 800,000 plus people and the team of that person in Amway doesn’t exist anymore. And it wasn’t sustainable. And there was a lot of reasons for that. But we got out of that business and for over a decade I still was looking and thinking and wondering god you know, there’s got to be a network marketing business that’s awesome. That is run right and is done right. That’s what we’re doing today. And that’s what we’re teaching people how to be successful using new methods online. It works beautiful during the stay at home order, because people are still reaching out last month 24 or 25 people I sponsored personally, in the business and I did not chase a single one of them, they all found me and wanted to get involved. So, it’s a completely different thing.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATE

So, if you want to understand more about it, I’m happy to share with you if you don’t want to get involved in what we’re doing. I totally get it but I’m not pushing for anybody. Obviously, I’ve got so many things to do. Right now, I don’t know how many people I could work with at the moment. It’s really been crazy because a lot of people are looking and they want to do something from home in a home-based business. But I’m happy to answer questions and if you do have time and you want to look at the opportunity and ask some questions after you check out a couple of key videos HERE. I’m happy to talk to you about it. I just want to share those experiences if you are an old network marketer, and I don’t mean old age, but you’ve done the old school way, and you love certain aspects of the business, like Amway and others out there. I don’t need to name them because I wasn’t part of them. But you know, the ones we’re talking about. Things are different. And you just have to find the right opportunity for you. If you love what you’re doing in companies like Amway, then stay with that group. You don’t want to be jumping around, but if you’re looking, you’ve been uncomfortable, you felt guilty. If you feel bad about yourself, then, you know, make some changes, at least do some research, you need to make sure you’re always educating and keeping going. Like I said, if some of the key people in Amway are no longer in it, and they were at very, very high levels, making millions of dollars a year and they’re no longer in that business. And we were part of that team of hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people. You got to ask yourself, are there good reasons for that? And yes, there are. Things are changing, and they have changed. Some people haven’t realized that yet. But if you’re looking for something new, it’s out there, and you can find it. And we’ll help you to do that in any way we can.

Is The Hempworx Business Saturated?

Now that more people are finally hearing about CBD and learning that not only does it have some health benefits but that there is a business opportunity that can be had. Some people are wondering if it is saturated already. This is a term i first heard after I joined Amway back in 1989.

When I first saw the Amway opportunity it was all new to me. The company, the products, the network marketing method. All of it! I had never heard anything about it and it had already been around for 50 years.

After I joined and started sharing the business opportunity, I had a few people who saw the duplication process we discussed and said that the business couldn’t work because it would get “saturated”. To them that meant that everyone that wanted to get involved, already had. Funny how most of those that gave that excuse never got in, so how could it get saturated?

 

To give you some perspective about the Hempworx Opportunity becoming saturated, consider this. in 1989 when I joined Amway they had been in business for 50 years. Done about $2 billion in business. The group I was involved in had over 600,000 people in it when I joined. Over the next 10 years we saw thousands of new people join the business. Obviously it wasn’t saturated yet was it? How could it be really? After all every day there are people who are turning 18 years of age who can now get involved in your business.

As of this writing Hempworx has about 60,000 distributors and did $100 million in sales. Even though it is one of the fastest growing network marketing businesses with a CBD product focus we still have a long way to grow to even get close to reaching our full potential.

What you really have to consider is are you going to get involved while Hempworx is in it’s initial stages of growth or when they are doing $2 billion in sales? As you can see from my own experience with Amway it doesn’t really matter when you get involved. You set your own pace and your own growth rate. You can have a large or small part of the multi billion dollar business as it grows.

For Hempworx they are just in their infancy still. As the company and it’s distributors continue to expand the business momentum will be reached where it will seem like everyone is getting involved. That’s when it is going to get really fun and there will be millionaires made at that time.

Does it really matter when you choose to build your own business? If you become a millionaire a few years later than some others, is that still acceptable? For most the answers are No and Yes. To others it may not be okay. That’s what’s great about building this type of business you can go fast or slow. It is all up to you.

How To Recruit For Your MLM Business 24 Hours A Day

When I first started in network marketing it was 1989. The Internet and cell phones were not used by many people yet. Those that even had a home computer would be rare as they were very expensive. What was there to do on them anyways? Play games with CGA graphics and keep track of your expenses on Lotus?

Cell phones were big and bulky. We called them “brick” phones. Because they were heavy and about the size of a brick. You had to be fairly wealthy to have one.

I had joined Amway and started to learn about how to build the business from my upline and learned as much as possible from books, tapes and seminars. The only way to build the business was person to person. If you wanted to share the business opportunity you had to call someone on the phone (landline) or go and talk to them in person. Or invite them to a meeting.  All of these methods were initially pretty scary to a lot of people, me included.

 

Eventually we did get the Amway business into a version of what was called “E-Commerce” via Quixtar. This was a better, more computer driven business model. The only thing that really changed though was how you ordered products. Instead of the paper order forms we started with, we entered the orders into the web page via the internet. Man was it slow and glitchy!  We were using dial up internet. If your under 25 years old, you probably don’t know what that is, but the speed was measure in kilobytes (KB) per second. And when it was the best we had 56KB connection speeds. WOW! of course today we have 100MG speeds routinely available over WiFi.

We did not use the internet to generate leads and prospects 24 hours a day because no one was really on the internet yet. Can you imagine a world like that?

Generate Your Leads 24 Hours A Day-7 Days A Week

Today with most people in the world using a smartphone and having access to the internet using one device or another, we can now reach anyone in just about every country. Using social media, blogs, websites, videos and emails we can build our businesses day and night. Asleep or awake. At work or on vacation. There is always someone looking for a better way to make a living or to fulfill their dream by staring and building their own business. Now you can help them find you.

The best thing about using these methods is that the “content” that we create, can be used for years after it’s initially created. It can keep working for you forever basically.

Can you image creating a video on YouTube today, that will be seen 3 or 4 years from now that gives someone a better understanding of what your business opportunity is? They get excited and join your team. Become a successful business builder all because you were able to educate them and help them understand what you are doing. As we create this content today we don’t know how many lives we can touch, but it sure is a lot more effective at reaching out to people from all walks of life than just talking to people you meet during your normal day, right?

Highly Duplicate-able

One of the things you need to grow a big network marketing business is to have anyone on the team be able to do what you did, or are doing. Building using these methods are certainly more suitable for the younger generation that grew up with this technology. My own kids will tell you they don’t use a cellphone to talk to their friends. They just text them. People like myself will have to relearn some things, but it can be done, and I have done it.  The good news is that you can still build using the old ways and learn to adapt to the new ways while you’re building. Earn while you learn.

You can bet that these methods will continue to evolve so you may need to plan on continuing to learn and grow as the market and technology changes. Just stay flexible and take it one step at a time. You can do it.

How Has Recruiting Changed Since The Days Of Amway?

Back when I joined Amway in 1989 we were shown how to recruit for the business opportunity much the way you probably were. Talk to your friends and family, then go to your warm market and finally to your cold market. You remember the ever popular cold contacting that we did. No, well I’m not surprised as most people who join a MLM will not contact cold contacts because it is a very uncomfortable thing to do sometimes. I left Amway about 10 years after getting started so I am sure they also have went through a transformation of sorts from the old days.

Lead Generation

Today I use a method of lead generation that creates 10-20 leads each day automatically. This is a big change from the old days when we would go to the shopping mall to meet people, who we would call later to see if they were interested in looking at a business opportunity. Yikes! I even called people out of the telephone book. Harder to do that today as most people don’t even have one of those anymore. And how does anyone have the time?

Today I use a combination of social media, You Tube, advertising and blogging to generate content that draws people in to see what you are doing and that’s a big change! The old Amway ways taught us to deal with the rejection because while cold contacting you were going to get a lot of it. Today you don’t get that rejection because people who are looking for what you have just need to find you. You don’t need to find them.

Online Dating

Only a few years ago people wouldn’t think about meeting their life partner or significant other using an online dating site. Today there are literally millions of people using them. I personally know of two different people who used them and met and married the person they met online. It’s a very common method today and very accepted for busy people, people who are generally shy and would never “cold contact” someone they met in a social situation somewhere.

So today why not meet your next business associate that way. This method that we use is similar to online dating in that you create content to interest people who are looking for a business opportunity and business partners. It works just the same.

I generate leads every day that come and check into my business opportunities. After those that are interested want more details we have a call or two to answer their questions and review the business plans just the same as we would in any traditional business. After they join your team, you work with them the same as before. Help them get started, teach them how to build a business and then teach them, to teach their team members.

Increases The Circle You Can Reach

There is no other way you can reach out to as many people using the old ways. You simply will not meet as many people and its takes along time. That’s not as effective or efficient as using current methods that people use daily to share ideas, comment on products and services and meet and communicate with others online. How can you meet people in other areas, regions and countries? By using online methods to create content and help them find you.

We teach people how to create content and use the online tools and our proven methods to generate leads everyday. If I can learn it so can you. I am willing to teach anyone who wants to learn how to create a full time income in an online business.

Try it . You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Why Amway And Other MLM Companies Are Not Cults

The thought that some people have about Amway and other MLM companies being cults has always amazed me. There are times when I wished they were, because in cults people blindly do what the cult leaders tell them to do. Our team members all have minds of their own and businesses of their own and they can do what they want to do.

Anyone who has actually been part of building a network marketing team or organization can tell you that almost no one does what they are asked or told to do regarding building their business. Even when they are the ones asking! That right there should convince you it’s not a cult. But let’s examine some of the concerns people have stated that tells them it’s a cult.

#1 The People In MLM Have A Cult Like Attachment To Their Company

I find this one very interesting as most people have an attachment to their employers company but don’t seem to think it’s a cult. In MLM people are supportive of the company and its products because it is supporting their business too. As far as people having a cult like following, you should check into the companies like Facebook, Google, Yahoo or Apple. Their employees are the most involved, passionate, cultist people I have ever seen outside of a real cult. They have their own campuses for their people with living areas, chef run kitchens and lounge spaces to encourage you to be creative and dedicated at all hours of the day. People are driven to be part of these companies.

If the naysayers meant people who are dedicated to what they are doing in a business of their own, then that could be confused with a cult, I guess.

 

#2 The People Are Very Religious

It is true some people in network marketing are religious. Some are not. It is a business that accepts all kinds of people and has no prejudgment for religious affiliation. It seems like some of the people who have been part of a MLM business have been uncomfortable with people having a pledge of allegiance or a prayer before a meeting or  a seminar. I myself don’t think it should be part of the business proceedings and that it can be off putting for some people.

However it is a right that owning your own business brings. It is no different than what the founder of Chik-Fil-A decided to do. Many of the company’s values are influenced by the religious beliefs of its late founder, S. Truett Cathy, a devout Southern Baptist. Most notably, all Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed for business on Sundays, as well as on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

That does not make them a cult does it? Even the Federal government of the USA closes down on these holidays. We all happily enjoy the paid time off for holidays from our employers right? No double standard there right?

#3 The People Are Fanatical

This can be another true observation that some people in MLM are very passionate about their opportunity to build their own business. It shows us that the American Dream which is so alive in immigrants to the USA, can also be stimulated in the people who are already here. It’s too bad so many people have forgotten or never knew that the USA was built on people who had their own businesses not jobs,

Most people were farmers, tradesmen and artisans before the industrial revolution. You know , people like bakers, tailors, blacksmiths, barbers, weavers, apothecaries etc.

These people were also fanatics about what they did. If not; they would not be able to survive.

Owning your own MLM business is like that in a way. The way, that allows you to be excited to build something for you and your family. That brings out the passion and excitement in people that had no other opportunity to start a business of their own with very little money or training. Somehow being excited about your own enterprise is now a cult. I guess they have never seen the people who go on the show Shark Tank or the Profit. They are fanatical about what they are doing. Starting and owning their own business.

I think it just makes some people uncomfortable that they are bored and not excited about their jobs but don’t have the ambition to do something of their own. Sad really.

I think that people just need to give other people their space to do what they want to do. As long as it does not affect you or what you are doing then keep moving on with your life, would you? If you were offered an opportunity to build your own business by a friend or family member then feel lucky that they saw something in you, that maybe you don’t. Possibly they believe in your capability more than you do. Feel fortunate; not put off by the invitation. They had your best interest in mind.

And if you decided not to join them in their “cult” then you proved my point that network marketing companies like Amway and others cannot be a cult, since no one does what we ask or tell them to do in MLM. After all you did not join right?

How to Sponsor Engineers in Network Marketing

Lets face it Engineers are not the most people friendly prospects you would want to work with in your network marketing business. I know first hand, because I am one.

I have only been prospected two times in my life for a network marketing opportunity, and both time I joined. I certainly wasn’t the easiest person to deal with both times.

The first time my soon to be sponsor and I argued for about 2 hours on the follow up phone call. I argued that the Amway business couldn’t work and that no one would do this business. This was in 1989 when Amway only did about $2 billion in business!!! Duh! So of course I knew everything about it, even though I didn’t. Finally my sponsor told me “fine then don’t build it!”

Now that really upset me and I then proceeded to tell him that I would join and show him this wouldn’t work if its the last thing I do. I know; that was really dumb for me to say that too. I eventually did apologize and we did build a successful Amway/Quixtar business. I’m no longer in Amway but the method worked that got me interested and it can work for you too.

All We See Are Problems

I guess once he tried to pull the opportunity away from me, I did not like it and I wouldn’t let him. There’s a lesson to be learned here when dealing with Engineers. We always see a problem that can be solved. Sometimes posing the business opportunity as a potential problem that needs to be solved may help you reach the engineers you know. Tell them you found a business opportunity that you don’t think can work and they will figure it all out for you. In the process they may even join you.

Sharing the Opportunity

Here is my best advice on this topic. Don’t tell the Engineering prospect how great this business is, and how much fun it is. How they will get to meet all kinds of different people, and be recognized for achievements and such.  And never, ever tell them that you have these really cool “functions” or “Seminars & Rallys”. It won’t work because we don’t care about that stuff. (at least outwardly). Additionally we don’t like that many people and we are generally introverts and afraid of public situations. That’s why we became engineers, right? We like computers, and machinery and software.

I remember the first Seminar and Rally I went to very clearly. I am pretty sure I am still traumatized by it actually.  The seminar was great! Lots of information and how to’s. We like that kind of stuff. The problem was in between the two sessions where some of the leaders wanted to get everyone excited and “fired up”.

They started competing in different sections of the room saying “I’m excited how about you?” to see who was louder. I think I was ready to walk out right then. I’m done here!

Engineers like data and scientific studies, testing and reports. We need to know how everything works. So be prepared to be able to explain it all. If you’re not you may find yourself in front of an Engineer who will take one look at your information, then proceed to explain to you how it works. That may be okay actually!

Following Up

My advice here is to be ready to overcome objections and answer more questions. Appeal to their logical side as we make many decisions “logically”. That being said continue to try to get out of your engineer prospect what his/her hobbies and interest are. Try to find out what his/her goals are. This may best be done by asking questions about the latest hot car. Or talking about the coolest airplane or video on this cool electronic gadget that allows you to bend space and time. Those things are of interest to Engineers and will allow you to establish some level of rapport. Find out what they liked best about what they saw. Don’t be surprised if you do not get an answer to that question. But instead they tell you what they did not like. This is typical of most people actually, not just engineers.

Be direct and say “I want to partner with you in this business”. Most Engineers cannot say no to a request for help and they may see this as a way to show you how much they know. We like that kind of thing.

Teaching and Training System

Once you have enrolled your engineer get them involved in the teaching and training system. They love that stuff. The more data and information the better, remember?

This will help them to get the details that they “need” to be able to move forward. I also suggest you get them with your experienced upline when you can so they can get a different perspective as soon as possible. It helps when they meet other like minded people.

Be Patient

Hang in there but don’t wait around for the Engineer to start building. The best thing is to leave them in the dust and asking you for help as you move on without them! Engineers are competitive and like to be right about everything.

They don’t like to lose, more than they like to win. So make them keep up with you.

As always you need to share with everyone, but keep in mind these tips for your technical people prospects. This includes doctors, engineers and scientists.

Keep at it and don’t be afraid to circle back to those who did not get involved right away.

The Real Network Marketing Story

Everyone seems to have some idea of what network marketing is and may have even been involved at one time or another in a network marketing company. Many people have heard of Amway, Mary Kay and Herbalife; which are all network marketing businesses.

Some of the people you talk to about your business opportunity or products may believe they know what it’s all about because they had a second cousin, who had a friend who didn’t make any money in network marketing. And of course they think they can’t either.

In my experience most people don’t really understand what we are doing but definitely have some preconceived ideas. To be able to help those people get a better understanding you need to be calm and provide clear answers. Its true many people don’t make any money in network marketing. But that is usually due to them not actually doing the work it requires.

If you don’t want to share what you are doing and you don’t want to promote your products or opportunity then network marketing is probably not for you.

However if you are excited about learning how to build your own business then with some hard work and possibly some additional personal growth you can learn how to be successful. It’s no different that when you first started to work a job. You needed to be trained. Here though you’r training to be your own boss. The CEO of your own business.

The good news is that your in business for yourself but not by yourself!

Look for  a network marketing company with a teaching and training system. In some ways you will be going back to school to learn how to become successful.

Amway made a lot of millionaires now there’s something new

I joined Amway in 1989. A high school friend of mine called me and asked me a simple question. “Was I interested in making an extra $2000 per month?” who would say no to that question, right?  I was about to get married and had a lot of expenses and was struggling to move up in my career as a R & D Engineer. I was invited to see the “plan” at his home. Later during the “follow up” I spent about an hour arguing with my friend that it could not work. Eventually he said “fine then don’t join”.

That really made me mad; him telling me I shouldn’t do something I want to do. Wait a minute here, now I want to do this? I remember telling him I’m going to do this just to show you it can’t work. Really dumb statement, I know.

I started to learn about how to build the network marketing business by sharing with my friends and family. Some of them actually joined us and we had a great time together. Then I moved on to the warm contacts. These were people that I worked with and knew from the past but did not have a current close relationship with. Then last but not least the dreaded “cold contacts”. We wrote a script and would call people we met during visits to shops and to the mall, looking at cars, whatever & whenever. Clearly this was the largest group of people and in fact many of the leaders in the group came from cold contacting.

We were following the examples and teachings of the leaders that were in my upline. Don Wilson and Randy Haugen. These people had reached a level of success we all wanted. They were millionaires many times over. They taught us how to do what they did and to build good size teams. It worked too! These leaders became very successful in Amway and we reached some levels of success as well.

Around 2001 Amway they created Quixtar. It was intended to be an online business concept where all customers could order online. You could enroll online and you had  a back office and all. This was going to revolutionize the business and I think the idea was a good one. Just a bit premature. Especially since we all only had “dial up” internet access. It was very slow and many people did not have access. We left Quixtar in 2003 and in 2007, Amway got rid of the name and went back to the name Amway Global.

What’s New Today?

A couple of years ago I started looking for the best network marketing companies today, and there are several.  I wanted to get back involved in this form of business because I had been involved in running conventional businesses over the last 20 years and really missed the focus on working as a team, helping other people, building something of your own and having unlimited earning potential. Plus there is no other business that allows you to duplicate your time as easily.

Now with virtually everyone having access to high speed internet service, cellphones in everyone’s hand, and constant social media viewing the network marketing business needs to change as well. There are still people trying to build the “old” way with face to face marketing and there is nothing wrong with it, if it works for you. What I have found is that people are moving at a faster pace than ever. It’s hard to get their attention and keep it, long enough to share the opportunity with them.

I felt that the network marketing building methods had to change somehow to take advantage of the current culture of being online and accessing social media almost continually.  Today we don’t call it “cold contacting” we call it “lead generation” and the whole process is flipped upside down from what we used to do.

In the old days we would ask a cold contact “if they have considered other business ideas” or “have you thought about owning your own business?”, or something similar. Sometimes we would hand out business cards or collect them. I even taught people in my group how to call people out of the phone book. I cannot believe that we used to do that. Wow! It worked but it was not for the faint of heart. Most people were deathly afraid of talking about a business opportunity to someone they don’t know face to face. Or even over the telephone. It was very hard to help people who said they don’t know anyone else, other than their broke brother in-law and their best friend who just got out of jail and really needs the business.

Frequently we would waste our time talking to someone who was not interested in doing something else other than working their job. They did not have a dream or goal to own their own business. Some just were not thinking of the future, just wanting to get by paycheck by paycheck.

Today we don’t need to ask people who are not looking. Today we make sure people who are looking can find us. By using social media, videos, websites and blogs we can draw in people who are searching just the way I was a few years ago. We have automated marketing systems and we can reach out to a much larger audience of “pre-qualified” people. I call them that because they are already clearly looking and they may be open to what your business opportunity is all about.

Once they locate you and join your team you just teach them the methods you use and so on. Now I am simplifying it a bit because we use some special tools and methods that only people who join our team get to use. However the principle is still the same.

Times continue to change so I plan to adapt to them in my network marketing business and continually improve. This is what will provide sustainability for years to come.
