CORONAVIRUS WHAT IS IT?
There is always scary news about flu illnesses, pandemic and deaths during the flu season, but what should you do about it? Many people are rightly concerned about the news stories in other countries about the spread of coronavirus. Interestingly the name “coronavirus” does not describe a single virus. It is a family of viruses that includes what we commonly refer to as the cold, flu and other respiratory illnesses. It has this name because of the shape and appearance when viewed under a microscope. So they are more correctly called “a coronavirus”, because there are many types.
The current scare is from a virus named COVID-19. This is the one you probably have heard of starting in China and spreading to other countries. This one has received a lot of media attention but don’t forget many more people catch what we consider the standard flu virus every year. Unfortunately many people die from this yearly too. According to the CDC for the period below here are the numbers:
IS THERE A FLU SHOT FOR IT YET?
The answer is not yet. Every year the vaccine manufacturers try to anticipate what strains of flu virus will be the most prevalent. Many people who take the flu shot actually get what is known as the quadrivalent influenza vaccine.
This vaccine has two Type A strains and two type B strains. These are all made with inactivated virus and do not give you the flu. You may have some mild flu like symptoms and that’s how you will know that your bodies immune system is working to develop antibodies to help you fight off the active; or living viruses you may come in contact with.
For right now there is not a vaccine for what is known as COVID-19. That is because it is too new. There are several companies working on the vaccine right now and it may be available in the future.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT GETTING ANY CORONAVIRUS?
According to the CDC website:
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
HOW TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS
I am a big believer in health supplements.
